“The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” – Psalm 118:6
In what do we have confidence? What is it that when we ponder it, gives us poise and a feeling that everything is going to be alright? Our confidence is determined by what we accept as true, what we have faith in. What do we have faith in? What do we rely on, swear by, and trust in? What are we convinced we can depend upon to help us, even in the most terrible of times? What do we expect to help us when faced with a situation where nothing seems to be able to provide relief? In the hour of our hopelessness, what are we convinced is right there with us to see us through?
If our answer is ourselves, or a loved one, or our resources, this may be the reason why we find ourselves in our current predicament. Sometimes God allows us to be in a situation where we become convinced that we only have moments to survive, that our hopes and dreams are about to expire. He allows us to be in a situation of dire hopelessness so we will finally realize that Christ alone has the power to make us free. God will provide these crucibles of pain so we might learn not to trust in anything other than Him. When we come face-to-face with our mortality, we also come face-to-face with the limitless power of Jesus Christ.
He reminds us in these moments of impending devastation that we cannot have full confidence in Jesus Christ until we abandon all confidence in anything or anyone else. This is the place of complete triumph and victory, the place of complete restoration and renewal.
